HOW TO PREPARE FOR ICE DAMS AND WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE ONE

If we get any sort of weather this year as we did in February 2021, then you should be prepared for ice dams. Similar to what happens in the fall with leaves, but can be far more damaging considering the ice.

An ice dam is a formation of a wall of ice at the edge of your roof near your gutters. As the snow melts from the heat in your attic, the water will run down the roof just as it does when it rains. But because of the formation of this ice dam, the water is forced to pool up and make its way underneath your shingles. Though this might seem like a roof issue, it isn’t. Your shingles are laid in a way that prevents water that is running downward from coming in, but not the other way. With that being said, because the roof is functioning as it should, you may not be able to file a claim with your insurance company for roof damage. But you may be able to file for interior damage.
